palazzolo acreide

palazzolo acreide derives from the ancient town of Akrai founded in 663 B.C. by Syracusans. Its Greek origin and baroque style, its landscape and climate, its local traditions and gastronomy, the cordiality and hospitality of its inhabitants make Palazzolo an interesting place to visit. The archaeological Park is wonderful, here the Greek theatre (III century B.C.) has a panoramic position dominating the Anapo valley. The shape of its orchestra is unique: it is a semicircle rather than a perfect circle and so the scene seems incredible advanced compared to the usual classic standard. In the town: Baroque churches, medieval alley ways and courtyards, noble buildings where the Sicilian Baroque mixes with a Bourbon eighteenth century and a recent Liberty style. In the Garibaldi street there is a masterpiece  of Bourbon fantasy: a balcony of incommensurable length  supported by twenty-seven sculpted brackets depicting comic masks, idiots’ heads sticking their tongues, griffons devouring serpents. Of particular interest is the Museum House of Antonino Uccello where are preserved important items of the indigenous civilization and of Sicilian and Hyblean folklore.

syracuse

syracuse has a magnificent natural port, wonderful place at sunset. The old city (Ortygia), built on a small island, witnesses three thousand years of history and the significant expressions of the most important Mediterranean civilizations. The Cathedral (Duomo) is a perfect summary of Sicily’s cultural heritage: a Doric temple built on a Sicilian settlement, Byzantine basilica, a Norman church with late Renaissance and finally baroque elements. Its Greek theatre and the archaeological Park are a spectacular site for the classic representations.

Famous is the Roman villa on the Tellaro river for its rare mosaics.

It is the largest necropolis in the Mediterranean basin. The nature reserve cut across by river Anapo is a  place of rare beauty. The vast Iblei tableland rose from the bottom of the sea through the superimposition of layers of calcareous sediments and volcanic effusions on Cenozoic sea beds.
